Why to go on a Yoga and Surf Retreat

Yoga and surf retreat in Costa Rica

The sound of waves hitting the shore. Sand between your toes. A morning yoga practice overlooking the Pacific. Then breakfast, a surfboard, and an ocean that may have completely different plans for you than it had yesterday.

That combination is what makes a yoga and surf retreat so much fun.

Yoga and surfing look like opposites from a distance. Yoga is deliberate. Surfing is chaotic. In yoga you control the movement. In surfing, you negotiate with a moving wall of water.

Put them together for a week and they make a surprising amount of sense.

Yoga Prepares the Body for Surfing

Surfing asks a lot from the body, especially if you are new to it. You paddle far more than you expect. Your shoulders and upper back work constantly. Your hips need to move quickly during the pop-up. Your legs and core stabilize you once you are standing.

Yoga works on mobility, balance, body awareness, breathing, and strength through ranges of motion that surfers actually use.

A morning practice can wake up the body before a session. A slower evening class can be a very pleasant way to loosen up after spending two hours paddling and falling into the ocean.

We go deeper into the connection in Yoga & Surfing Truly Are Soul Mates.

Surfing Takes Yoga Off the Mat

There is another reason the two work together, and it has nothing to do with flexibility.

Surfing forces you to practice patience.

You can do everything correctly and the wave does not come. You can paddle perfectly and miss it. You can finally catch the best wave of the morning and fall off for no obvious reason.

The fastest way to ruin a surf session is to become angry at the ocean.

Breathing, attention, patience, and the ability to reset after a mistake are all useful in yoga. They are just as useful while sitting on a surfboard waiting for the next set.

Costa Rica Is Made for the Combination

Costa Rica is one of the world’s classic surf destinations, and it also has a huge yoga and wellness culture. The water is warm, the coastline is beautiful, and there are waves for almost every level.

Around Anamaya, beginners can learn at Playa Grande near Montezuma, while Santa Teresa and Playa Hermosa across the peninsula offer many more surf options. Lonely Planet’s updated guide to Costa Rica’s best surf spots includes Santa Teresa among the country’s standout surf destinations.

For a broader overview, the official Visit Costa Rica surfing guide shows how many different surf regions the country has.

Build the Week You Actually Want

At Anamaya, a yoga and surf retreat does not mean you must surf until your arms stop working.

You can combine surf lessons with yoga classes, healthy meals, spa treatments, waterfall hikes, beach excursions, and time to relax. Some guests want five surf days. Others discover after two lessons that their ideal schedule is surf, massage, hammock, repeat.

Our Yoga & Surf Package explains how we customize the experience, and our Soul Surfer Yoga Retreat and Surf Camp is for guests who want surfing to be one of the main themes of the week.

The Part People Remember

People often arrive focused on the activities. They want to improve their yoga, learn to surf, hike to a waterfall, or finally take the Costa Rica trip they have been talking about for years.

Then something else happens.

A group of strangers eats together, struggles through surf lessons together, laughs at wipeouts, practices yoga in the morning, and watches the sunset at the end of the day. By the middle of the week, it feels less like a hotel full of separate travelers and more like a temporary little community.

You go home with a new skill, a stronger body, and probably sand in something that should not contain sand.

More importantly, you go home remembering what it felt like to spend a week outside, moving, learning, eating well, and paying attention to what was directly in front of you.

That is a pretty good reason to go on a yoga and surf retreat.
